Devising terminal wayfinding & information strategy for Bahrain International Airport

Version Absolute Design Studio (VADS) was invited by the Almoayyed Contracting Group, who were the primary contractors appointed for the interior refurbishment of the airport terminals. As a part of the design scope, VADS worked with the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) to devise a way finding and information strategy for the two Manama terminals.

Design of sign family

Scope of the project extended to the design of the sign family which VADS did in a short span of three months. Further explorations of the implementation of the proposed strategy were put on hold due to the then announcement of the construction of a new airport.

Creating viewing zones

As airports are information intensive environments, it was therefore necessary to establish priorities in order for the way finding signs not to complete with other signs such as advertising signs, concessionaire’s signs, and art.

In consultation with BAC, VADS established a priority ranking for all airport signs and displays along with, if possible, FIDS as well. Defining and maintaining consistent viewing zone would greatly reduce visual clutter and help travelers’ access to information easily and intuitively.

Primary way finders

Primary information carriers were designed, set, and identified for each terminal. Signs have the provision for secondary information in the form of icons and texts.
