Sign Today 2021 in Chennai marks a welcome opening
Chennai played host to the 38th edition of Sign Today, which was held from December 17-19 at Sri Ramachandra Convention Centre, Chennai. It was the first exhibition to happen in Chennai for the indoor/outdoor advertising, digital printing and signage industry after a break of nearly two and half years, due to the pandemic.
In spite of the limited number of exhibitors, it was a successful show! The exhibitors were excited to meet their customers ‘in-person’ after a long time, to renew and reaffirm their connections. As few states have imposed ban on outdoor flex graphics/banners, most of the exhibitors showcased their flatbed UV and laser machines instead of solvent machines at Chennai edition of Sign Today 2021. They are not only focusing on the signage industry but also looking for diversifying into laser, wood engraving, album making, etc.
A new lesson
Serious trade visitors attended the show, looking for new opportunities to expand their business. Exhibitors were thrilled to have closed some deals with those from other industries such as photo lab owners and album makers. This seems to be the prevalent trendas existing businesses are equipping themselves to provide ‘complete end-to-end in-house solutions’ for all the needs of their customers – a lesson learnt due to the unpredictable pandemic restrictions.
The expo proved to be an incentive which pulled people to travel after being home-ridden due to multiple lockdowns! Especially, few of the exhibitors expressed that for their kind of products/machineries, it is the ‘touch and feel’ factor that plays a major role in decision making,which was missing in the virtual/online options they had explored during the lockdown.
Since Sign Today happened along with the Image Today photo exhibition, new venues were opened for laser engraving, flatbed & UV systems which are increasingly being procured by the photo album and framing industry too. In addition, digital printers are now becoming part & parcel of photo colour labs.
Main showcases
Some of the machines showcased at the expo include UV flatbed printers, hybrid UV machines, laser cutting and engraving machines, turbo laminators, inkjet printers, CNC routing machines, laser marking machines, channel bending machines, cutting plotters, UV roll-to-roll printers in addition to inks, spares, LED, digital signage and the like. Key exhibitors included LIPI Marketing, Southern Agencies, Meera Laser, Aldura, CMT, among others.
