HP’s newest latex ink Designjet L25500
Launches at viscom Dusseldorf ’09

HP Designjet L25500 models
HP has unveiled an expanded portfolio of HP Latex printing technology solutions designed to broaden production capabilities and provide a viable alternative to eco-solvent technologies. The new HP Designjet L25500 enables small and mid-size digital print and sign shops, copy shops and photo labs to produce indoor and outdoor applications with ease while reducing environmental impact.

Applications: HP Designjet L25500 offers easy, low-maintenance printing of a wider range of applications from indoor POP displays, exhibition graphics and interior décor like wall murals and fabrics to outdoor banners, bus shelters and vehicle wraps. Six original HP printing materials compatible with HP Latex ink printers include two recyclable substrates and three PVC-free alternatives.

Santiago Morera, vice president and GM, Designjet Large-format Printing Solutions, Imaging and Printing Group, HP said, “The expanded HP Latex Printing Technology portfolio enables us to meet and exceed this demand for a variety of customers, allowing them to create a competitive advantage and seize new growth opportunities.”

Technology: The expanded HP Latex printing portfolio builds on the proven technology of HP Designjet L65500. Available in 42- and 60-inch models, the printer delivers unmatched versatility for a broad range of high-quality and flexible, outdoor and indoor applications. In addition, it prints a wider range of applications – from durable outdoor signage to high-resolution, close-view prints – than is possible with eco-solvent or traditional water-based printing alone.

Water-based HP Latex inks and HP 789 Designjet printheads enable an easy transition into large-format or outdoor printing for entry-level sign shops, photo labs and digital printers because of unattended printing with no daily, manual printhead maintenance required.

HP Designjet L25500 printer was demonstrated publicly for the first time at viscom Dusseldorf (October 1-3, 2009) and will showcase at Visual Impact Image Expo (22-24 November 2009) at Sydney.

Easier, brighter and greener UV LED technology

UV system leader Air Motion Systems Inc marked first look at PEAK LED-UV product series in the recent PRINT ’09 expo. The patent-pending PEAK LED-UV design from the company is built around a high brightness chip platform that achieves at least twice the radiant power available from recent-generation UV LEDs, and operates at just 20 percent of the electricity required of a conventional mercury arc lamp.

PEAK LED-UV technology represents a revolutionary step forward in the graphic arts industry and the UV curing arena. As a 100 percent solid-state device, there are no moving parts to maintain in the LED UV module, no heat is emitted from the light source, and at a 20,000+ hour estimated life of the light-emitting diodes, and the system potentially never requires a lamp change.

Kyocera develops world’s
fastest inkjet printhead

KJ4 Series
The enhanced technology offers high-speed, high-resolution, full-colour printing at 150 million dots per second. This is Kyocera Corporation’s fastest inkjet printhead in the world—KJ4 Series. Each of 2,656 nozzles in the printhead ejects ink at up to 60,000 dots per second (at 60kHz drive frequency).

Kyocera’s previous inkjet printhead offered the world’s fastest print speed when it was introduced in 2008—150 meters per minute at 600×600dpi resolution, using a drive frequency of 30kHz. And this newly developed KJ4 Series sets new records for high-resolution, full-colour inkjet printing, offering fastest print speeds in any of three resolutions: 600×360dpi (330m/min at 40kHz), 600×600dpi (200m/min at 40kHz) and 1200×1200dpi (150m/min at 60kHz).

The new technology enabling this development was achieved by enhancing the drive frequency with Kyocera’s unique elemental technology making the interior ink channels more compact, optimising the nozzle configuration and improving the water-repellent coating on the nozzle surface to prevent clogging, thus ejecting the ink more accurately. In addition to speed, it provides the high resolution required in the commercial printing market, with a 50 percent improvement in ink-drop placement accuracy over the company’s previous model.

Mimaki launches Tx400-1800D printer
Latest in direct-to-textile and dye-sublimation printing

mimaki introduces a new ink and cost effective dye-sublimation and direct-to-textile inkjet printer Tx400-1800D. The printer employs innovative features that enable the user to adjust the ink volume jetted by the printheads according to the type of fabric and design. It can accommodate both direct-to-textile and dye-sublimation printing employing sublimation media.

Ink options: Three different inks—dye sublimation ink, reactive dye ink and acid dye ink are available and their environmental impacts are lowered as they are delivered in reusable 2l-ink containers. Newly developed dye-sublimation ink excels in low vapour emission. In comparison with the former ink, service providers will thus be able to control more than before the impact of vapour on the media.

Tx400-1800D is equipped with Bulk Ink System (BIS) and its patented UISS (Uninterrupted Ink Supply System) to ensure automatic switching of inks when one 2l-ink container runs empty without interrupting printing. Printable up to a maximum width of 1,850 mm, the printer’s print resolution is between 300x300 dpi to 900x900 dpi.

Biodegradable Star Flex PVC

White opaque substrate for small and wide-format frontlit displays, STARFLEX BioMedia is a weather resistant landfill biodegradable PVC. This media available in the sizes ranging from 31” to 210” have been tested for biodegradation. The test procedure carried in a way that untreated flexible PVC and biodegradable treated PVC samples were collected and cleaned in alkaline soap with water. The samples were rinsed in de-ionized water, dried and mounted with double-sided conductive tape to aluminium stubs, the vacuum evaporated with gold-palladium alloy to provide a conductive coating under the electron beam.

Analysis of the samples at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences/Institute of Meteoritics, University of New Mexico revealed that microbial colonies are found on the surface of the treated sample, but absent in untreated sample. Depressions around the colonies indicate that they are degrading the material. Since these changes are occurring on the treated sample, they could only be the result of the treated PVC.

Seamless biodegradable STARFLEX BioMedia are well matched with solvent and UV printers. Sun Sign & Technologies, Delhi are the authorised dealer of this high-quality media in India.
