Salim Art
A tradition still alive

Mohammed Salim
Salim Art in Nainital is an old lineage of wall art. Mohammed Salim, an artist by his passion and profession, is the bastion behind this old art shop in the town. “My job is more of my passion now, as I earn little through this these days in the market, which is more or less occupied by the so-called flex printing,” says Salim. The prospect of wall art graphic has been widening in the big cities with PSPs using high-end printing technologies and materials aggressively penetrate into this segment. But the wave is not yet reached to small towns, such as Nainital. That’s why Salim feels there is still room for artist in the market. “Many elementary schools in Nianital have been my clients for years. Cantonment Public School is one of them. These schools want to decorate their classroom walls with theme-based graphics to motivate young children. We use oil/acrylic colours to produce the wall arts from time to time,” explains Salim, adding that the effect of hand-painted wall graphics cannot be similarly produced on simple flex prints. He however says advantages are there—either a flex-printed graphic or a hand-painted graphic, uniqueness in graphic depends on the situation and circumstance. In addition to schools, Salim Art has a handful of clients from government departments. “There are some government departments, such as transport, we have tied up for some specific signage works. We keep handling various roadside directional signs and notices erected on the sides of hill roads around the town. These weatherproof graphics are painted manually. No digital printing technology can produce these signs painted on tin sheets or sometimes on wood,” explains Salim. He says they may adopt digital large-format printers in future, but they will not give up their hand-painting tradition.

Kala Darpan
An old way adopter

Samir Khan (Pintu)

Situated in the narrow Tailors Lane at Naya Bazar, the company is a brainchild of Late Moid Khan, who was a popular painter in the town. Today the legacy has been passed on to his son Samir Khan (Pintu), who is also an artist. “There are some artworks that cannot be replaced or substituted by flex print,” says Pintu, adding that they design and decorate walls of playschools in the town. According to him, these playschools prefer hand-painted graphics over flex graphics.

In addition to handpainted wall art, Kala Darpan on other side offers their customers flex prints too. For this, they have tied up with Media Advertising located in Azad Nagar in the town. The production facility of Media Advertising is equipped with a Lotus printer and company’s main activities involve in production of glow signboards as well. “With such a big helping hand like Media Advertising, we can take up any project that our customers want in the shortest notice,” says Pintu.

What all Kala Darpan can cater includes a diverse range of signage projects, which involve LED letters, radium boards, outdoor banners, POP/POS systems, one-way vision displays, among others. “We give our priority to hand-painted wall art projects for schools and side by side, we also take care of any other conventional project, so that we never ever let any of our customer down,” comments Pintu.
