Pros and cons of sealing drive
in Paharganj signage market

Paharganj in central Delhi, located adjacent to New Delhi Railway Station, is a signage hub where dwelled everyone of sign making. However, the sealing drive in the city has forced many signage companies in the market area to move their production facilities to far-off industrial pockets, alleging them non-permissible use of machines. Some of them talk to SIGN & GRAPHICS voicing mixed reactions about the drive.

“It’s quite true that signage business in Paharganj has been affected due to the sealing of printing facilities in the area. It has ended the market’s age-old tradition of being a central hub for everything of signage and sign making business. Customers could come here to buy media, get printed it here and ship it from here. Since machines have been shifted, which means not to a particular location but to various scattered industrial pockets, customers miss the opportunity that Paharganj would provide.”

“Now the little relief is that congestion in Paharganj has been reduced after the drive. But it’s not fair that we now cannot run a small cutting machine to trim edge of a signage frame. The impact of the drive is largely on those who run machines and engage in retail activities. There is no harsh blow to traders who engage in wholesale business in the area.”

“Paharganj has been a key meeting point for every one of us in the signage market of Delhi or north India. This concept of the market being the ‘key meeting point’ no longer holds true since all PSPs and sign makers in the area have moved their production facilities to different industrial areas, which are far away from here. Today customers might surely miss the way they were served in Paharganj.”

“We all know that the drive is for the betterment of society and environment. But there is always a way to execute it mutually without disturbing business and hurting sentiment. I would say it’s certainly wrong to shut production facilities and machines being evacuated overnight, without any prior notice or enough time to prepare ourselves for the raid.”

“It’s not that the companies shifting their production facilities from Paharganj are flocking together in the same industrial area. They have moved to different far flung areas. After all, people who used to work in these facilities have to give up their jobs. The sealing drive not only decelerates business in the market, but also results in job loss for many.”

“We deal in banner stands, tents and other signage and advertising materials. Since the day sealing derive had removed all the machines running in the Paharganj market, we feel emptiness in the by-lanes of the market. There is no doubt that the drive has caused drastic reduction in crowd of retail customers in the market.”

“The sealing drive in Paharganj drove us to shift our production facility to Naraina Industrial Area. If we take it in a positive way, our production facility in the new place is now bigger and spacious, which is designed in a way to adopt a larger range of machines and equipments. On the contrary, it’s obvious that the sealing drive has slowed down the footfall of customers in Paharganj.”

“There is reaction of strong disapproval and anger shown by many against the sealing drive in Paharganj. I know it has affected business to a certain extent. But my idea is whether we are in Paharganj or somewhere else business must go on. On other hand, I have no ill feeling about such sealing of unauthorised running of machines in the area. Such action rather helps in decongestion of the market.”

“The sealing drive in Paharganj is a blessing in disguise. Certain amount of business might have affected, but it will be benefit for every one of us in the long run. Such activity will bring cleanliness and a safe environment in the market. After all, we shifted our production facility long time ago when the first notice came for such drive around ten years back.”

“Apart from big corporate customers our client list consists of a number of walk-in customers who randomly come to us. People come to Paharganj for complete signage printing and assembling jobs. Now that printing has become a missing activity in the area due to the sealing drive, we miss a huge crowd of customers in the market.”
