American Eagle Outfitters
turns ‘spectacular’ at
Times Square
|
American Eagle Outfitters at its new Times Square project turns this
traditional notion of a ‘spectacular’ on its head. In contrast to the
flat, rectangular LED screens that proliferate on Times Square, The
Barnycz Group designed a sculptural, 12-faceted display system (including
a 125-ft tower) that serves as a dynamic canvas for American Eagle
content. New LED technology leverages different resolutions, allowing the
dynamic facades to be more cost effective, sustainable, and attractive. The
12-faceted assemblage of Barco LED panels (more than 15,000 sq ft in
total) includes
three different
visualisation
solutions combined
to provide a
unique palette
for the American
Eagle brand. The
building’s facade
is wrapped with
1,441 TF-20
LED panels on
the 12 surfaces,
for a total pixel
count nearing
3.3 million. The
weather-resistant
LED panels are
designed for
rugged outdoor
environments, and
the display can
deliver 281 trillion
colours.
100 life size Mark Zuckerberg
cutouts on White House lawn
Waldorf-based signage company Heritage Printing
& Graphics was contacted by the activist group
Avaaz to make 100 cutouts of the Facebook CEO,
Mark Zuckerberg, used in the White House demonstration.
Produced on a flatbed printer, simultaneously working
with a CNC router, it took 5 hours to expedite the process.
The Fix Fakebook custom cutouts were printed on a
coroplast substrate, made it to accept a wooden stake and
planted it on the lawn. Avaaz planted life size cutouts on
the east lawn of the White House to call attention to what
they claimed are hundreds of millions of fake accounts
spreading disinformation on Facebook. The standees are
72 inch tall, demonstrating Heritage Printing & Graphics’
ability to easily produce large cutouts for many purposes.

Digital billboards turned
into hacker ‘honeypots’
Columbia-based specialist insurer Hiscox has turned digital
billboards into hacker ‘honeypots’ as part of its new
‘CyberLive’ ad campaign, to raise awareness of the threat of
cybercrime to small businesses. For the campaign, Hiscox set up three
honeypot servers, typically used by small businesses, which feeds data
into live digital posters positioned across the US. Each time a cyber
attack takes place, the poster reacts by triggering a pulsing red light,
which gradually builds as further attacks occur and resets every 24
hours. The more attacks there are to the servers, the more the poster
headline visually reacts.
The Hayward
Gallery re-opens
around London
The Hayward Gallery, one of London’s most loved iconic art
spaces, hosting shows by major names including Andy Warhol
and Francis Bacon over the course of its 50-year history, was
closed for two years for refurbishment. But it was eventually reopened
in style in early 2018 with the first major UK retrospective of
acclaimed photographer Andreas Gursky, who is known for his large-scale pictures, filled the Brutalist gallery space with his incredible
work, making the most of the natural light from the newly exposed
pyramid roof lights. The Hayward Gallery is filled with large-format
posters with eye-catching artwork, located throughout London.
Billboard cheers
movie-awards
season
During the
recent
movie-awards
season, Carolinabased
Allison
Outdoor cheered
the industry with a
message displayed
on high-tech
digital billboards,
constructed without
paper or glue. The
lure of big-canvas art
design attracted top
talent to out-of-home
media. The industry’s
mini-campaign to
applaud the billboard
movie was created
by award-winning design agency Extra Credit
Projects in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Promotional
copy was inspired by the simple, all-caps graphics
used in the film, and the read ‘Four Golden
Globes Outside Hollywood’.
Turkish Airlines is first airline to
advertise on New Piccadilly Lights in London
Landsec has signed a deal with Turkish Airlines which becomes the first
airline to advertise on the iconic new Piccadilly Lights, London’s most
iconic outdoor advertising space equivalent to New York’s Times Square.
Turkish Airlines, which flies to more countries than any other airline in the world,
recently launched its digital out-of-home campaign, with the advertising deal
struck by Ocean. The airline is using the state-of-the-art screen to showcase its new
#TakeMeThere campaign. As part of the campaign, Instagram users are invited
to take a selfie in front of the iconic display as it shows Turkish Airlines’ latest
campaign, using the hashtag #TakeMeThere and tagging @turkishairlines to tell
the airline where they want to travel to. Winners are picked at random weekly, and
notified shortly afterwards, before jetting off to their chosen destination.
