BIS stamp of approval for LED products

With constant increase in production of LED products over the past few years, the signage market is now flooded with products and brands which are little or not at all known to us. These products are not necessarily meeting any quality and safety standards. Every one of us must take this as a serious concern for time has come to check whether the LED products we use are duly approved by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).

Established under the BIS Act 2016 for the harmonious development of activities of standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standard Body of India, which provides traceability and tangibility benefits to the society by providing safe reliable quality goods, minimising health hazards to end users or costumers, promoting exports and imports substitute and controlling over proliferation of varieties through standardisation, certification and testing. The bureau certifies and approves LED products as well.

These days, people in the industry care little or nothing about the safety and performance of LED products. In India, there have been few reported cases of LED signage systems due to using sub-standard products, faulty construction or overheating. But the danger looms large as people nowadays fail to know or adopt trusted and tested LED products.

BIS approval is more accurate and efficient than any other certification programmes on the market and quality assurance can be completed in a much quicker turnaround time without the need for partial approval. The bureau’s Product Certification Schemes aim at providing third party assurance of quality, safety and reliability of the product(s) to end-users or customers. Presence of BIS certification mark, known as Standard Mark, on a product is an assurance of conformity to the specifications.

LED products manufacturers are permitted to self certify their licensed products after ascertaining their conformity to the standard. Through its surveillance operations, BIS maintains a close vigil on the quality of certified products. The conformity is ensured by regular surveillance of the licensee’s performance by surprise inspections and testing of samples, drawn both from the market or factory.

In the Indian signage market, only a few manufacturers and suppliers of LED products get BIS approval. New Delhi-based Silver Sign, which supplies a range of LED modules and power supplies under their brand HiSign, is prominently one of the BIS-approved players in the league. Providing advanced solutions to their customers in a cost effective, durable and safety manner, the company supplies its extensive range of technologically advanced HiSign LED modules and power supplies.

In order to ensure that their HiSign LED modules and power supplies are of the optimum quality and safe, Silver Sign works extensively with their partnering suppliers and specify the highest quality of raw materials and components to be used in their products. They often work with their partners even to develop customised solutions that best suit the Indian market. Perhaps, they are first company in India to get their entire range of HiSign LED modules and power supplies among other products BIS approved and certified. Moreover, HiSign offers various warranty honouring programmes for different products making it convenient for their customers in the rare occasion of any fault.

The certification scheme of BIS operates through a network of 34 branch offices based in state capitals and major industrial towns. In addition, the bureau’s five regional offices oversee the work of the branch offices.
