Signage in South India resonates
in different tunes

City of Chennai is where hoardings and billboards in public spaces are totally banned under a strict Supreme Court order. But this doesn’t deter the spirits of the city’s signage players. They find other alternatives to sustain their activities in specific clusters like retail, indoor and specialty signage. Such attribute of the city’s signage players makes Chennai a totally diverse but unique kind of market in its own way. And additionally is the distinguished development sweeping across Coimbatore, which is considerably a promising hub bulged with a number of new and enthusiastic players seeing big business expansions ahead. Recent tour of the SIGN & GRAPHICS team across these two eminent south Indian cities unearthed the impending potentials of those players. JYANESWAR LAISHRAM compiles a brief account of the exemplifying works and lives of the signage majors.

Olive Imaging
(Chennai)
‘Quality’ marks longer impression

Ever since the days when things got to be totally in different ways in the printing industry, Olive Imaging had been engaged into screen printing, offset printing and others for more than 40 years. “Our business is quite hierarchical as most of us (partners) in the company are cousins and brothers,” said W Md Saqhib of Olive Imaging. He added that the boom in digital large-format segment in the early 2000s persuaded to unveil Olive Imaging equipped merely with a Nur Salsa printer. ‘Quality’ in outputs has always been the USP of the company whose production facility relatively got expanded in the year 2004 with the adoption of Jeti and HP Scitex Grandjet, which could bring a swift change of its 4,000 sq ft print production to 25,000 sq ft a day. Infrastructure of Olive Imaging keeps updating constantly as per the trends in the contemporary market developed in accordance with the emergence of new products and technologies. “Within a span of two years after the mega expansion in 2004, we added another HP Scitex Grandjet, followed by HP Scitex XL Jet which helped us get on to an organic growth,” mentioned Md Saqhib. The company’s devotion to almost 70 percent of their jobs in print and delivery of billboards and other outdoor displays including hoarding and others terminated soon after the government pulled down all billboards in the city in 2008. “It was as if they cut our head when we simply required to get our hair cut,” asserted Md Saqhib. Olive Imaging’s u-turn in outdoor sign business was felt like something that one fine morning they woke up and found 60-70 percent of their clients missing. But it was not the end of road for the company! “As long as we are well equipped with value-added printers like Jeti and HP Scitex XL Jet, such infrastructure helps us find alternative pathway to retail and indoor domains, forgetting what all we did for billboards or outdoor signs,” affirmed Md Saqhib adding that the aqua-based printer like HP 5500 and an eco-solvent machine from Mutoh in the portfolio are designed to churn out indoor graphics whether it is backlit or others in in-store/in-shop displays. Telecom sector has been the area where Olive Imaging has been closely working with a number of corporate clients prior to the imposition of ban on outdoor signs. Nokia, TATA DoCoMo, Airtel, Aircel are some of the major clients, apart from other big ones in the retail market which successfully fill the cavities left after the truncations of outdoor billboards and hoardings in their business. Overall volume might have gone down drastically, but Olive Imaging is still doing well in in-store branding and display for big retail giants including Samsung, LG, Harley Davidson, etc. Concerning the importance and possibility of the re-opening of the prospects of outdoor signage, Md Saqhib rightly mentioned that a quarter-page ad in The Hindu may cost Rs eight lakh a day, but the same budget could make four impressive billboards running for two whole months continuously.

The Chinese medias are the ones AdVision has heaped up all in their racks and they are selling with huge demand in the region because people still yearning for such affordable materials. “In the late 1990s it was quite a boom period and even in the early 2000s too the same zeal was sweeping around the market,” said Mathew. But things got be unhinged a bit now and hoping for the return of the bygone period in near future, according to Mathew.

Mathew pointed out the full growth in the industry and is still a long way to go when it connects to the rhythm of development perceiving in the current Indian signage industry. “We need some potential players in the country whether it is a machine or media manufacturer. The moment we can survive with our products without depending on other overseas markets, Indian industry will get the full bloom,” Mathew mentioned. He concluded that now is the time to get some alternatives for a genuine growth in the industry.
